- ELEVEN YEARS AGO in the Chicago Loop, a young woman approached me and asked for a cigarette. I don't smoke. She replied, "Ahh, you look like the right type" and ran off. That guy on fullerton!!! Gah! He said the same thing to me and I thought - Oh thank you, nice old man - and then I read his "free speech issue" once I got to work, and I wanted to turn right around, run back to fullerton and give him a good smack in the face. Ridiculous.

melanie—you're spot-on. oh, and thank you! i showed my recent art + design class pictures of your 'bard' book as final project inspiration (i photographed it before i handed it back...hope you don't mind!). it's wow-worthy. hope you're still making beautiful illustrations. take care. m.
